Battery storage in Upper Valais

What applies to your battery storage in Upper Valais (Oberwallis)

Subsidies for battery storage in Upper Valais

The law of the Canton of Valais applies in Upper Valais. On its solar page, the canton’s energy office describes how a battery system can raise the self-consumption of a photovoltaic system. We found no subsidy for the battery there or on the subsidy page. The canton subsidises thermal solar systems through the buildings programme. Communes and energy suppliers may offer their own contributions. We check this for your address when preparing the quote and only name documented amounts.

Registration and fire protection

We register the battery with the grid operator together with the solar system. A licensed electrical installation company carries out the installation. For fire protection, the leaflet of the VKF (Swiss association of cantonal fire insurers) for lithium-ion batteries applies. Home batteries up to 15 kWh per fire compartment count as small storage systems, up to 100 kWh as medium ones. In chalets and holiday homes we check carefully at the site visit which room is suitable for the battery.

When a battery pays off in Upper Valais

Electricity prices in Upper Valais are among the lowest in Switzerland. If you pay little for grid electricity, each kilowatt-hour you use yourself saves less. A battery therefore does not automatically pay off. What matters is your consumption in the evening and at night, your utility’s feed-in tariff and the price of the battery. We put the options with and without a battery side by side in the quote. If the calculation speaks against a battery, we say so.

It looks different if security of supply matters. With a backup power function, part of the house keeps running during a power cut, for example the fridge, lighting and heating controls. For households with a heat pump, a battery can also shift solar power into the evening. We discuss with you whether either of these reasons applies to you.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Does the Canton of Valais subsidise a battery in Upper Valais?

On the subsidy and solar pages of the cantonal energy office we found no contribution for battery storage. Some communes or energy suppliers in Upper Valais may have their own contributions, which we check when preparing the quote.

Does a battery pay off at the low electricity prices in Upper Valais?

With a low purchase price, the gap to the feed-in tariff is often smaller, so the battery saves less per kilowatt-hour. That is why we calculate the system with and without a battery and only recommend one if the numbers work.

Can a battery supply power during a power cut in Upper Valais?

Only with a backup power function. It must be planned from the start, with a suitable inverter and an adapted electrical distribution board. The Valais energy office points out that the system must be set up accordingly.

How large does the battery storage need to be?

As a rule of thumb, about 1 kWh of storage capacity per 1 kWp of solar output, usually 8 to 15 kWh for single-family homes. What matters is your consumption in the evening and at night. We read it from your electricity bills and calculate the right size.

Is a battery financially worthwhile?

That depends on the electricity price, the feed-in tariff of your grid operator and the price of the battery. The lower the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth. In the quote, we calculate both options, with and without a battery, side by side.

How long does a battery last?

Modern lithium iron phosphate batteries are designed for several thousand charge cycles, which often means 10 to 15 years or more. Warranty terms differ by manufacturer. We state them in the quote.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
