What applies to your battery storage in the Canton of Thurgau

Subsidies for battery storage in the Canton of Thurgau

The Canton of Thurgau does not directly subsidise photovoltaics, but its 2026 energy subsidy programme includes a subsidy for batteries. It is a one-off CHF 1,000, at most 25% of the total investment. The requirements are a stationary battery for an existing or planned grid-connected solar system and at least 10 kWh of usable capacity. For extensions, the new capacity alone must reach 10 kWh, and the first subsidy must be at least three years in the past. The application must be submitted before installation starts.

The category is limited to 700 applications, and the submission date decides which are considered. At the electricity supplier’s request, 10% of the capacity must be made available for a fee, except for neighbourhood batteries. Depending on the commune, there may be further contributions, which we check when preparing the quote.

Registration and fire protection

The battery is registered with the grid operator. In Thurgau these are many small utilities such as Arbon Energie, EW Romanshorn or LST Energie. The 2015 fire protection regulations of the VKF (Swiss association of cantonal fire insurers) do not explicitly cover battery storage. The state of the art is the paper on the VKF fire protection guideline for solar systems, which also clarifies where battery storage may be installed.

When a battery pays off in the Canton of Thurgau

Thurgau has a lot of roof area on single-family homes and farms. If you work during the day or need electricity in the evening for a heat pump, a barn or a car, a battery lets you use more of your own solar power. Utility tariffs differ clearly within the canton, so we calculate with the electricity price and feed-in tariff of your utility. Together with a solar system, you receive a quote with and without a battery for comparison.

Because the quota is limited, it pays to plan the battery early. First, at the site visit, we clarify space, inverter and consumption. Then we submit the application before installation begins. For single-family homes, 8 to 15 kWh of usable capacity usually makes sense. For businesses with high daytime consumption, we work out the size individually.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

How high is the battery subsidy in the Canton of Thurgau?

A one-off CHF 1,000, at most 25% of the total investment, for at least 10 kWh of usable capacity. A qualified specialist must install the system. We handle the application for you.

What does the limit of 700 applications in the Canton of Thurgau mean?

The subsidy category is limited to 700 applications, by submission date. If the quota is used up, a commitment may only follow later. We tell you the current position when preparing the quote.

May I start building the battery in the Canton of Thurgau before the subsidy is confirmed?

The application must be submitted before installation starts. Starting without a final commitment is at your own risk. We discuss with you whether waiting or building is the better choice.

How large does the battery storage need to be?

As a rule of thumb, about 1 kWh of storage capacity per 1 kWp of solar output, usually 8 to 15 kWh for single-family homes. What matters is your consumption in the evening and at night. We read it from your electricity bills and calculate the right size.

Is a battery financially worthwhile?

That depends on the electricity price, the feed-in tariff of your grid operator and the price of the battery. The lower the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth. In the quote, we calculate both options, with and without a battery, side by side.

How long does a battery last?

Modern lithium iron phosphate batteries are designed for several thousand charge cycles, which often means 10 to 15 years or more. Warranty terms differ by manufacturer. We state them in the quote.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
