What applies to your battery storage in the Canton of St. Gallen

Subsidies for battery storage in the Canton of St. Gallen

We are not aware of a cantonal subsidy programme for battery storage. Many communes and regions in the canton do have their own programmes, which differ from commune to commune and can change at any time. The Energieagentur St.Gallen offers a subsidy calculator for this. We check the current position for your commune and, where there is a programme, submit the application before work starts.

Registration and fire protection

The battery is registered with the grid operator. In the Canton of St. Gallen these are the St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke (SAK) in 15 communes, the St.Galler Stadtwerke, rwt Regionalwerk Toggenburg and several village corporations. The 2015 fire protection regulations of the VKF (Swiss association of cantonal fire insurers) do not explicitly cover battery storage. The state of the art is the paper on the VKF fire protection guideline for solar systems, which also clarifies where battery storage may be installed. At the site visit we show you where the battery can go.

When a battery pays off in the Canton of St. Gallen

The cantonal median for household electricity is slightly above the Swiss median, but the utilities differ greatly. The higher your own electricity price and the lower the feed-in tariff, the more likely a battery is to pay off. On slopes and in the Alpine foothills less solar power is produced in winter, so a battery then mainly covers the evening and morning on sunny days. With a heat pump or an electric car, evening demand rises. We calculate the solar system with and without a battery, using your utility’s tariff.

We set the battery size based on your consumption in the evening and at night. For single-family homes, 8 to 15 kWh of usable capacity usually makes sense. We read your electricity bills and, if you have one, your smart meter data, and take a heat pump and electric car into account. That way we avoid a battery that sits unused in winter.

Frequently asked questions

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Is there a subsidy for battery storage in the Canton of St. Gallen?

We are not aware of a cantonal programme for battery storage. Some communes and regions have their own programmes, which differ by place of residence. We check the current position for your commune.

Who receives the battery registration in the Canton of St. Gallen?

Your local grid operator: in many communes SAK, in the city of St. Gallen the St.Galler Stadtwerke. We register the battery and the solar system for you.

Does a battery in the Toggenburg or the Rhine Valley need to be planned differently from one in the city of St. Gallen?

The technology is the same. Differences come from the utility's electricity price and feed-in tariff, and from the space and consumption in the house. We calculate with the values for your address.

How large does the battery storage need to be?

As a rule of thumb, about 1 kWh of storage capacity per 1 kWp of solar output, usually 8 to 15 kWh for single-family homes. What matters is your consumption in the evening and at night. We read it from your electricity bills and calculate the right size.

Is a battery financially worthwhile?

That depends on the electricity price, the feed-in tariff of your grid operator and the price of the battery. The lower the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth. In the quote, we calculate both options, with and without a battery, side by side.

How long does a battery last?

Modern lithium iron phosphate batteries are designed for several thousand charge cycles, which often means 10 to 15 years or more. Warranty terms differ by manufacturer. We state them in the quote.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
