Battery storage in the Canton of Solothurn

What applies to your battery storage in the Canton of Solothurn

Taxes and subsidies in the Canton of Solothurn

The cantonal energy subsidy programme of the Canton of Solothurn covers the building envelope, wood heating, heat pumps, thermal solar systems, heating networks and Minergie. We found no subsidy for battery storage there. If you are planning a battery, you therefore calculate with your own costs and the everyday benefit. Communes and energy suppliers may pay additional contributions, which we check when preparing the quote.

On the tax deduction, the canton is clear. The tax court changed its practice in 2022. Since then, investments in storage connected to a renewable energy system count as a deductible energy-saving and environmental protection measure. New buildings are excluded during the first five years. The tax manual also states that the battery is valued at the cadastral value. Its proportional tax value feeds into the calculation of the imputed rental value (Eigenmietwert). Clarify the consequences for your property in advance with the tax office.

Registration and fire protection

We connect a battery to the solar system and register it with the grid operator. For fire protection, the leaflet of the VKF (Swiss association of cantonal fire insurers) for lithium-ion batteries applies. It names home batteries as an example of small storage systems up to 15 kWh per fire compartment and of medium ones up to 100 kWh. We decide the location, clearances from combustible material and ventilation at the site visit.

When a battery pays off in the Canton of Solothurn

In the Canton of Solothurn, a large share of residential buildings still heat with oil. If you replace your heating with a heat pump, you use more electricity in the evening and in the cold season. It then makes more sense to shift solar power from midday into the evening. What remains decisive is the gap between your electricity price and your utility’s feed-in tariff. We calculate the system with and without a battery and put both options side by side in the quote.

Frequently asked questions

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Can I deduct a battery from my taxes in the Canton of Solothurn?

According to the canton's tax manual, investments in storage combined with renewable energy systems count as a deductible energy-saving and environmental protection measure. For new buildings this does not apply in the first five years. Confirm the amount in advance with the tax office.

Does the Canton of Solothurn give money for a battery?

The cantonal subsidy programme does not name batteries as a measure. Communes or energy suppliers may offer their own contributions, which we check for your address.

Do I have to notify the grid operator of a battery in Solothurn?

Yes, the battery is part of the system and is registered with it. We do this together with the solar system, including the inspection after installation.

How large does the battery storage need to be?

As a rule of thumb, about 1 kWh of storage capacity per 1 kWp of solar output, usually 8 to 15 kWh for single-family homes. What matters is your consumption in the evening and at night. We read it from your electricity bills and calculate the right size.

Is a battery financially worthwhile?

That depends on the electricity price, the feed-in tariff of your grid operator and the price of the battery. The lower the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth. In the quote, we calculate both options, with and without a battery, side by side.

How long does a battery last?

Modern lithium iron phosphate batteries are designed for several thousand charge cycles, which often means 10 to 15 years or more. Warranty terms differ by manufacturer. We state them in the quote.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
