Subsidies for battery storage in the Canton of Schaffhausen
In its 2026 energy subsidy programme, the Canton of Schaffhausen supports stationary batteries for grid-connected solar power systems with a one-off contribution of CHF 1,000, at most 25% of the total investment. The conditions: at least 10 kWh of usable capacity, a new system without an extension and installation by a qualified specialist. The application must be submitted before installation starts. At the electricity supplier’s request, 10% of the capacity must be made available for a fee, except for neighbourhood batteries. We submit the application and, on request, pre-finance the subsidies.
Registration and fire protection
The battery is registered with the grid operator. In the canton, the Elektrizitätswerk des Kantons Schaffhausen supplies 25 communes, and the city of Schaffhausen has its own utility. The 2015 fire protection regulations of the VKF (Swiss association of cantonal fire insurers) do not explicitly cover battery storage. The state of the art is the paper on the VKF fire protection guideline for solar systems, which also clarifies where battery storage may be installed. We decide the right place in the house at the site visit.
When a battery pays off in the Canton of Schaffhausen
Schaffhausen is one of the cantons with expensive household electricity, and the cantonal median is clearly above the Swiss median. The bigger the gap between the electricity price and the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself in the evening brings. A battery of 10 kWh or more is a sensible size for many single-family homes and also meets the subsidy condition. We calculate the quote with and without a battery side by side, using your utility’s tariff, and plan the solar system and the battery from a single source.
So that the subsidy is not lost, we plan the order carefully: first the site visit and quote, then the application, then construction. For single-family homes a sensible size is often between 8 and 15 kWh of usable capacity. We read your consumption from your electricity bills and take a heat pump and electric car into account. That way you know before ordering what the battery brings.

How much subsidy is there in the Canton of Schaffhausen for a battery?
The canton pays a one-off CHF 1,000, at most 25% of the investment. The battery needs at least 10 kWh of usable capacity and must be newly installed. We prepare the application for you.
When do I have to apply for the battery subsidy in the Canton of Schaffhausen?
Before installation starts. If you start earlier, you do so without a subsidy commitment and at your own risk. That is why we only plan the start of work once the application has been submitted.
Do I have to make battery capacity available to the utility in the Canton of Schaffhausen?
The subsidy programme provides that, at the electricity supplier's request, 10% of the capacity must be made available for a fee. This does not apply to neighbourhood batteries. We discuss the conditions with you before you order.
How large does the battery storage need to be?
As a rule of thumb, about 1 kWh of storage capacity per 1 kWp of solar output, usually 8 to 15 kWh for single-family homes. What matters is your consumption in the evening and at night. We read it from your electricity bills and calculate the right size.
Is a battery financially worthwhile?
That depends on the electricity price, the feed-in tariff of your grid operator and the price of the battery. The lower the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth. In the quote, we calculate both options, with and without a battery, side by side.
How long does a battery last?
Modern lithium iron phosphate batteries are designed for several thousand charge cycles, which often means 10 to 15 years or more. Warranty terms differ by manufacturer. We state them in the quote.
