Battery storage in the Canton of Obwalden

What applies to your battery storage in the Canton of Obwalden

Subsidies and taxes in Obwalden

The 2026 energy subsidy programme of the Canton of Obwalden supports the building envelope, efficiency, renewable energy and EV chargers. For photovoltaics it supports winter-optimised systems, especially on facades. The cantonal government has raised the output-based subsidy for these for 2026. We found no subsidy for battery storage in the programme overview. Subsidy funds are limited, so for winter PV it pays to apply early.

For tax, the cantonal tax administration regulates the deduction for photovoltaics and batteries in the solar systems leaflet, as of 1 January 2025. It applies to existing buildings and names waiting periods. We recommend confirming the amount in advance with the tax office.

Registration and fire protection

The canton has a notification form for solar systems. We include the battery in the registration with the grid operator and have a licensed electrical installation company carry out the installation. For fire protection, the leaflet of the VKF (Swiss association of cantonal fire insurers) for lithium-ion batteries applies. Home batteries up to 15 kWh per fire compartment count as small storage systems, up to 100 kWh as medium ones. We clarify where the battery should go at the site visit.

When a battery pays off in Obwalden

Electricity prices in the Canton of Obwalden are below the Swiss average. A battery therefore brings less per kilowatt-hour you use yourself than in cantons with high prices. It can still pay off if consumption in the evening and at night is high and your utility’s feed-in tariff is low. Small utilities in the canton have different tariffs, so we calculate with the tariff of your grid operator.

With a facade system producing winter electricity, the daily profile changes. It produces more in the morning and evening hours and in winter. Whether a battery fits is something we assess case by case. We are also happy to plan the heat pump and the battery together.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Is there money for a battery in Obwalden?

The 2026 energy subsidy programme lists the building envelope, efficiency, renewable energy, EV chargers and winter-optimised photovoltaics, especially facade systems. The overview does not list battery storage. We check commune contributions when preparing the quote.

Can I deduct a battery from my taxes in Obwalden?

The tax administration regulates the deduction in the solar systems leaflet, as of 1 January 2025. It covers photovoltaics and batteries on existing buildings. Confirm the amount for your case in advance with the tax office.

Does a battery pay off in Sarnen at low electricity prices?

That depends on your evening consumption and your utility's feed-in tariff. With a lower purchase price, the benefit per kilowatt-hour is smaller. We present the quote with and without a battery so you can see the difference.

How large does the battery storage need to be?

As a rule of thumb, about 1 kWh of storage capacity per 1 kWp of solar output, usually 8 to 15 kWh for single-family homes. What matters is your consumption in the evening and at night. We read it from your electricity bills and calculate the right size.

Is a battery financially worthwhile?

That depends on the electricity price, the feed-in tariff of your grid operator and the price of the battery. The lower the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth. In the quote, we calculate both options, with and without a battery, side by side.

How long does a battery last?

Modern lithium iron phosphate batteries are designed for several thousand charge cycles, which often means 10 to 15 years or more. Warranty terms differ by manufacturer. We state them in the quote.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
