Battery storage in the Canton of Graubünden

What applies to your battery storage in Graubünden

Taxes and subsidies in Graubünden

On tax, the Canton of Graubünden is clear. The tax administration’s practice ruling lists installing a photovoltaic system among investments in energy saving and environmental protection. Because storing solar power locally serves the efficient use of renewable energy, the costs of battery storage also fall under this. They are deductible for existing buildings.

The cantonal subsidy programme for photovoltaics targets winter electricity. The guide of the Office for Energy and Transport requires, among other things, a tilt angle of 60 to 90 degrees and at least 3 kWp. The subsidy is based on installed output in kWp. A battery does not appear in the guide, and the application must be submitted before work starts. We confirm which subsidy applies today with the office before we send you a quote.

Registration and fire protection

You notify solar systems in the canton with the notification form and the self-declaration. We include the battery in the registration with the grid operator. A licensed electrical installation company carries out the installation. For fire protection, the leaflet of the VKF (Swiss association of cantonal fire insurers) for lithium-ion batteries applies. Home batteries up to 15 kWh per fire compartment count as small storage systems, up to 100 kWh as medium ones. In mountain and holiday homes we check at the site visit whether the room is dry, frost-free and well ventilated.

When a battery pays off in Graubünden

Electricity prices in the Canton of Graubünden are slightly above the Swiss average. Whether a battery pays off therefore depends on the individual case: on your evening and night consumption and on your utility’s feed-in tariff. A house with a heat pump uses a lot of electricity mainly in winter, when the system produces little. A winter electricity system on a facade or steep roof produces more in that period. A battery then shifts part of the electricity into the evening hours.

Where the grid in remote locations is more prone to faults, a backup power function can be added. We put the options side by side in the quote and calculate with the tariff of your grid operator.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Can I deduct a battery from my taxes in Graubünden?

Yes, for existing buildings held as private assets. The tax administration's practice ruling states that storing solar power serves the efficient use of renewable energy. The costs are therefore deductible in the same way as those of the photovoltaic system. Confirm your case in advance with the tax office.

Does the Canton of Graubünden pay a subsidy for the battery?

The cantonal winter electricity programme bases the subsidy on installed output in kWp. A battery does not appear in the guide. We confirm which subsidies apply today with the Office for Energy and Transport before we send you a quote.

Is a battery useful in Chur or Davos during a power cut?

Only with a backup power function. It must be planned from the start with a suitable inverter and an adapted electrical distribution board. The battery then keeps important appliances such as the fridge, lighting and heating controls running.

How large does the battery storage need to be?

As a rule of thumb, about 1 kWh of storage capacity per 1 kWp of solar output, usually 8 to 15 kWh for single-family homes. What matters is your consumption in the evening and at night. We read it from your electricity bills and calculate the right size.

Is a battery financially worthwhile?

That depends on the electricity price, the feed-in tariff of your grid operator and the price of the battery. The lower the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth. In the quote, we calculate both options, with and without a battery, side by side.

How long does a battery last?

Modern lithium iron phosphate batteries are designed for several thousand charge cycles, which often means 10 to 15 years or more. Warranty terms differ by manufacturer. We state them in the quote.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
