What applies to your battery storage in the Canton of Glarus

Subsidies for battery storage in the Canton of Glarus

The energy subsidy programme of the Canton of Glarus remains unchanged in 2026 and focuses on thermal insulation and replacing heating systems. For photovoltaics it has a roof pitch bonus. We are not aware of a subsidy for battery storage, so we name no amount. Communes and utilities may have their own programmes, which we check for your address when preparing the quote.

Registration and fire protection

The battery is registered with the grid operator. In the Canton of Glarus there is one utility per commune: Technische Betriebe Glarus, Technische Betriebe Glarus Nord and Technische Betriebe Glarus Süd. The 2015 fire protection regulations of the VKF (Swiss association of cantonal fire insurers) do not explicitly cover battery storage. The state of the art is the paper on the VKF fire protection guideline for solar systems, which also clarifies where battery storage may be installed. The installation is carried out by a licensed electrical installation company, including the inspection.

When a battery pays off in the Canton of Glarus

Electricity prices differ clearly across Glarus, and depending on the utility they are above or below the Swiss median. That changes the value of each kilowatt-hour you use yourself. In the narrow valley the sun reaches many roofs late in winter, and in summer the system produces more at midday than a household needs. A battery shifts this electricity into the evening. We calculate the solar system with and without a battery side by side, using your utility’s feed-in tariff. If needed, we include backup power, for example for the fridge, lighting and heating controls.

For sizing, we read your consumption from your electricity bills and, if you have one, from your smart meter data. For single-family homes a sensible size is usually between 8 and 15 kWh of usable capacity. At the site visit we check the roof area, shading from the mountains and the space in the house. You then receive a binding quote within 72 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Is there a subsidy for battery storage in the Canton of Glarus?

We are not aware of a cantonal subsidy for battery storage. The programme focuses on thermal insulation and replacing heating systems. Whether your commune or utility pays anything, we check when preparing the quote.

Which grid operators are there in the Canton of Glarus for my battery?

Technische Betriebe Glarus, Glarus Nord and Glarus Süd, one for each of the three communes. We register the battery and the solar system with your utility.

Is a battery suitable in the Glarus hinterland?

Yes, if space and consumption fit. In the narrow valley, mountains often shade the sun early in winter, and the battery helps mainly on sunny days. At the site visit we check shading and the location for the battery.

How large does the battery storage need to be?

As a rule of thumb, about 1 kWh of storage capacity per 1 kWp of solar output, usually 8 to 15 kWh for single-family homes. What matters is your consumption in the evening and at night. We read it from your electricity bills and calculate the right size.

Is a battery financially worthwhile?

That depends on the electricity price, the feed-in tariff of your grid operator and the price of the battery. The lower the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth. In the quote, we calculate both options, with and without a battery, side by side.

How long does a battery last?

Modern lithium iron phosphate batteries are designed for several thousand charge cycles, which often means 10 to 15 years or more. Warranty terms differ by manufacturer. We state them in the quote.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
