Battery storage in the Canton of Bern

What applies to your battery storage in the Canton of Bern

Subsidies for battery storage in the Canton of Bern

The Canton of Bern does not directly subsidise photovoltaics, and we also found no contributions for battery storage in the cantonal subsidy programme. The federal government pays the one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV) through Pronovo for the solar system, and it does not take a battery into account. Some communes and energy suppliers have their own programmes. When preparing the quote we check what applies to your address, and we name no amounts that we cannot document.

For tax, the tax administration lists the photovoltaic system as a deductible investment in energy saving and environmental protection. We found no separate statement on batteries. Confirm the deduction in advance with the tax office or your tax adviser.

Registration and fire protection

Federal and industry rules apply to the battery. The VKF (Swiss association of cantonal fire insurers) classifies home batteries in its fire protection leaflet for lithium-ion batteries. Up to 15 kWh per fire compartment a battery counts as a small storage system, above that up to 100 kWh as a medium one. The leaflet refers to the low-voltage installation standard and to SIA standard 2061 for battery storage systems in buildings. We help plan the location, clearances and ventilation at the site visit.

We register the battery with the grid operator together with the solar system. The inspection after installation is part of this.

When a battery pays off in the Canton of Bern

The Canton of Bern ranges from urban neighbourhoods to hamlets in the Bernese Oberland and the Emmental. A battery is more likely to pay off if you use a lot of electricity in the evening and at night, for example with a heat pump or an electric car, and if your utility’s feed-in tariff is low. In that situation each stored kilowatt-hour replaces expensive grid electricity. For locations with rare power cuts, a backup power function can be added. It needs a suitable inverter and an adapted distribution board from the start.

We plan new systems so that a battery can be added later. You can find more on the system itself under solar system.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Does the Canton of Bern subsidise a battery?

We found no contributions for battery storage in the cantonal subsidy programme. If your commune or energy supplier contributes something, we check this for your address when preparing the quote.

Do I need a permit for a battery in the Canton of Bern?

As a rule there is no separate building permit. The battery is notified to the grid operator together with the solar system, and a licensed electrical installation company carries out the work. We handle this.

Does a battery pay off at Bernese electricity prices?

That depends on your evening consumption and your utility's feed-in tariff. The bigger the gap between the purchase price and the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself brings. We calculate both options side by side.

How large does the battery storage need to be?

As a rule of thumb, about 1 kWh of storage capacity per 1 kWp of solar output, usually 8 to 15 kWh for single-family homes. What matters is your consumption in the evening and at night. We read it from your electricity bills and calculate the right size.

Is a battery financially worthwhile?

That depends on the electricity price, the feed-in tariff of your grid operator and the price of the battery. The lower the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth. In the quote, we calculate both options, with and without a battery, side by side.

How long does a battery last?

Modern lithium iron phosphate batteries are designed for several thousand charge cycles, which often means 10 to 15 years or more. Warranty terms differ by manufacturer. We state them in the quote.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
