Subsidies for battery storage in Basel-City
The Canton of Basel-City subsidises thermal solar systems, while the federal government subsidises photovoltaics. The canton’s subsidy page does not list battery storage. The Aktion Solarkraftwerk Basel (solar power plant campaign) pays a contribution if you renovate your roof or facade to improve its energy performance and fit photovoltaics on the renovated area. It covers the modules and the renovation, not the battery. The application must be submitted before work starts. We check other offers from communes or energy suppliers for your address.
Registration and fire protection
In a densely built city, the location of the battery matters more than in the countryside. The VKF (Swiss association of cantonal fire insurers) divides stationary storage by energy content. Home batteries up to 15 kWh per fire compartment count as small storage systems, up to 100 kWh as medium ones. For these, the leaflet sets its own requirements for the installation room and protection. In apartment buildings and terraced houses we therefore check early whether the cellar, a utility room or a garage is suitable.
We register the battery with the grid operator together with the solar system. The installation is carried out by a licensed electrical installation company.
When a battery pays off in Basel-City
Compared with other cantons, electricity prices here are high. If you use your solar power yourself, you save that price. For power fed into the grid you only receive your utility’s feed-in tariff. A battery shifts midday electricity into the evening and so raises self-consumption. This pays off mainly for households that use a lot of electricity in the evening and at night.

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Is a battery subsidised in Basel-City?
For solar systems, the subsidy page of the Canton of Basel-City lists only thermal systems and refers to the federal government for photovoltaics. Battery storage does not appear there. We check additional contributions from third parties when preparing the quote.
Where do I put a battery in Basel if space is tight?
Usual places are a utility room, the cellar or a garage. The room must be dry and frost-free with enough clearance for ventilation. We check the space at the site visit and suggest a solution.
Does a battery pay off at Basel electricity prices?
The higher the price you pay compared with the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself brings. The feed-in tariff depends on your utility. We calculate the system with and without a battery.
How large does the battery storage need to be?
As a rule of thumb, about 1 kWh of storage capacity per 1 kWp of solar output, usually 8 to 15 kWh for single-family homes. What matters is your consumption in the evening and at night. We read it from your electricity bills and calculate the right size.
Is a battery financially worthwhile?
That depends on the electricity price, the feed-in tariff of your grid operator and the price of the battery. The lower the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth. In the quote, we calculate both options, with and without a battery, side by side.
How long does a battery last?
Modern lithium iron phosphate batteries are designed for several thousand charge cycles, which often means 10 to 15 years or more. Warranty terms differ by manufacturer. We state them in the quote.
