Battery storage in the Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden

What applies to your battery storage in Appenzell Ausserrhoden

Subsidies for battery storage in Appenzell Ausserrhoden

The canton supports the photovoltaic system itself. For systems of 2 kWp or more it pays a contribution on top of the federal one-off payment (Einmalvergütung, EIV), since 1 September 2025 at most 50 percent of it. Measure km-21 of the cantonal subsidy programme relates to the solar system. It names no subsidy for battery storage. Communes and energy suppliers may have their own contributions, which we check for your address when preparing the quote. You submit the application for the solar system only after commissioning.

Registration and fire protection

The battery is registered with the grid operator. In Ausserrhoden, SAK supplies 14 communes, and some communes have their own utilities. The 2015 fire protection regulations of the VKF (Swiss association of cantonal fire insurers) do not explicitly cover battery storage. The state of the art is the paper on the VKF fire protection guideline for solar systems, which also clarifies where battery storage may be installed.

When a battery pays off in Appenzell Ausserrhoden

Electricity prices in the canton are slightly above the Swiss median and vary from utility to utility. If you receive the cantonal subsidy for the solar system and also cover your own consumption, you save most when the battery shifts daytime electricity into the evening. This applies especially to households with a heat pump or an electric car. We calculate the solar system with and without a battery side by side, using the feed-in tariff of your utility. Whether the battery pays off on top of the cantonal subsidy, you will see in the quote.

The battery size depends on the system and your consumption. As a rule of thumb, allow about 1 kWh of capacity per 1 kWp of solar output, usually 8 to 15 kWh for single-family homes. We read your consumption from your electricity bills and calculate several battery sizes. From this you can see how much self-consumption each size brings and what it costs.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Does the Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden subsidise battery storage?

The cantonal measure km-21 covers the photovoltaic system and names no storage subsidy. When preparing your quote we check whether your commune or utility pays a contribution.

When do I apply for the solar system subsidy in Appenzell Ausserrhoden?

Only after commissioning, once the federal decision is legally binding. The Office for the Environment (Amt für Umwelt) receives the application through the portal of the buildings programme. We prepare the documents.

Which grid operator is responsible for my battery in Appenzell Ausserrhoden?

In 14 communes it is St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke (SAK). There are also smaller utilities such as Elektrizitätswerk Heiden or Elektra Walzenhausen. We register the battery with them.

How large does the battery storage need to be?

As a rule of thumb, about 1 kWh of storage capacity per 1 kWp of solar output, usually 8 to 15 kWh for single-family homes. What matters is your consumption in the evening and at night. We read it from your electricity bills and calculate the right size.

Is a battery financially worthwhile?

That depends on the electricity price, the feed-in tariff of your grid operator and the price of the battery. The lower the feed-in tariff, the more each kilowatt-hour you use yourself is worth. In the quote, we calculate both options, with and without a battery, side by side.

How long does a battery last?

Modern lithium iron phosphate batteries are designed for several thousand charge cycles, which often means 10 to 15 years or more. Warranty terms differ by manufacturer. We state them in the quote.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
