Hail damage to solar systems in the Canton of Zurich

What applies in the Canton of Zurich after hail damage

Who insures your solar system in the Canton of Zurich

In the Canton of Zurich, the cantonal building insurance (GVZ) insures all buildings. The GVZ expressly lists solar energy systems among the co-insured fixtures, as long as they form part of a building’s structural installations. Hail is a natural hazard event and so part of what building insurance covers. Whether your system counts as part of the building in your case depends on the GVZ’s line between building and movable property. We recommend reporting a new system to the GVZ after commissioning and checking the sum insured against the construction costs.

What to do after hail

Report the damage to the GVZ using the form on its website before you have anything repaired. We inspect the system on site, measure the strings and document the damage with photos and a written report. You submit this claim file to your insurer. The GVZ decides on the payout. We then replace the defective modules.

Documents for your report

Good documentation pays off with the GVZ. Note the date and time of the hail, photograph hailstones next to a ruler and have the invoice for the system ready. Without measurement, fine cell cracks often go unnoticed, and they can reduce output. Our report records which modules are affected and which are not.

Hail protection for new systems

The GVZ recommends hail resistance class 3 as a minimum for building components, meaning no damage from a hailstone 3 cm in diameter. Tested products are listed in the Swiss hail register (Hagelregister). For a new system, we discuss the choice of modules with you at the site visit. The GVZ also offers free advice on preventing building damage and has a regulation on natural hazard prevention. The GVZ decides whether a contribution is possible for your project.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Is a solar system in the Canton of Zurich insured against hail by the GVZ?

The GVZ counts solar energy systems among the co-insured fixtures of a building. The GVZ confirms whether your system falls under this definition. After construction, also check the sum insured.

Who do I report hail damage to my solar system to in the Canton of Zurich?

To the GVZ, using the damage report form on its website. Report the damage before any repair. We prepare the inspection findings and photos for the claim file.

Which hail resistance class does the GVZ recommend in the Canton of Zurich?

The GVZ recommends at least class 3. You can find products with tested hail resistance in the Swiss hail register (Hagelregister). The class is shown on the module datasheet.

Can I always see hail damage on the modules?

No. Broken glass or cracks are visible. Fine cell cracks inside cannot be seen with the naked eye. They can reduce output or later lead to hotspots. So an inspection is worthwhile even if the modules look intact from the outside.

May I leave the system running after the hail?

Not if there is broken glass or visibly damaged cables. Broken modules can carry voltage. Switch the system off at the inverter switch if you can reach it safely, and keep away from the modules. Then call us.

Does cantonal building insurance pay for hail damage to a solar system?

Often yes, depending on the policy and the canton. Fixed-mounted systems are often covered by the cantonal building insurance, sometimes extra cover is needed. Check your policy and report the damage promptly. We supply the technical documents.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
