Hail damage to solar systems in the Canton of Zug

What applies in the Canton of Zug after hail damage

Who insures your solar system in the Canton of Zug

In the Canton of Zug, all buildings must be insured with the Zug building insurance. It covers fire and natural hazard damage. For solar systems, the technical implementing rules (as at 1 January 2026) set clear limits. Photovoltaic and thermal systems, including storage systems, directly on or at the building are co-insured if their output is more than 600 watts. Up to 600 watts, they fall under contents insurance. Free-standing systems and systems on boundary walls are not co-insured, whatever their output. Systems that serve business purposes only are likewise not insured with the building.

What to do after hail

Report the damage to the Zug building insurance before anything is repaired. For a free-standing system, contact your contents insurer. We inspect the system on site, measure the strings and record damage to modules, cables and the inverter. You receive the findings, photos and quote as a claim file. We then replace the defective modules.

Documents for your report

For the report, it helps to have the date and time of the hail, photos of the visible damage and the system data: output in watts, module type and year of construction. In the Canton of Zug, the output decides whether the system falls under building insurance, so it belongs in every claim file. We add measurement values and a cost estimate.

Hail protection for new systems

If you plan a system on an outbuilding or in the garden, the type of construction decides how it is insured. On-roof and in-roof systems on the building are covered, a free-standing ground mount is not. We discuss this at the free site visit. When choosing modules, the Swiss hail register (Hagelregister) gives tested hail resistance figures.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Is a solar system in the Canton of Zug insured against hail?

Systems of more than 600 watts directly on or at the building are co-insured by the Zug building insurance, and hail counts as natural hazard damage. Smaller and free-standing systems fall under contents insurance.

Where do I insure a free-standing solar system in the Canton of Zug?

Free-standing systems and systems on boundary walls are not insured by the Zug building insurance. They belong under contents insurance.

Are battery storage systems co-insured in the Canton of Zug?

Storage systems are treated together with the solar system. They are co-insured by the Zug building insurance if the system on or at the building has an output of more than 600 watts.

Can I always see hail damage on the modules?

No. Broken glass or cracks are visible. Fine cell cracks inside cannot be seen with the naked eye. They can reduce output or later lead to hotspots. So an inspection is worthwhile even if the modules look intact from the outside.

May I leave the system running after the hail?

Not if there is broken glass or visibly damaged cables. Broken modules can carry voltage. Switch the system off at the inverter switch if you can reach it safely, and keep away from the modules. Then call us.

Does cantonal building insurance pay for hail damage to a solar system?

Often yes, depending on the policy and the canton. Fixed-mounted systems are often covered by the cantonal building insurance, sometimes extra cover is needed. Check your policy and report the damage promptly. We supply the technical documents.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
