Hail damage to solar systems in Upper Valais
Hail damage to your solar system: what applies in Upper Valais
Who insures your solar system in Upper Valais
Upper Valais is part of the Canton of Valais. Valais is one of the few cantons without compulsory insurance for buildings. There is no cantonal building insurer. Private insurance companies insure against fire and natural hazard damage, which includes hail. Banks generally require building insurance as a condition for a mortgage.
For your solar system, this means there is no uniform cantonal rule. Your policy is what counts. Check whether natural hazard damage is included, whether the system counts as part of the insured building and whether the sum insured covers the value of the system. If you are building new, talk to your insurer about this. Building insurance covers loss of yield only if your policy expressly provides for it.
What to do after hail
Report the damage to your insurer first. Photograph the visible damage from the ground and do not climb onto the roof. We then inspect the system on site, measure the strings and check cabling and inverter. We document the damage for the insurer, with findings, pictures and a quote. We replace defective modules.
For handling the claim you need the module type, number, year of construction and the invoice for the system. Many policies set a deadline for reporting damage. It is in your insurance conditions: read it first after the event.
Hail protection for new systems
Because no cantonal insurer sets requirements in Upper Valais, it pays to ask your own insurer before you build. We choose modules with tested hail resistance from the Swiss hail register (Hagelregister) and register the system. We put together the system details for your insurer. You, as the owner, make the report to the insurer.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Is there a cantonal building insurance for solar systems in Upper Valais?
No. Valais is one of the few cantons without compulsory insurance for buildings and without a cantonal building insurer. Buildings are insured with private insurers. Your policy shows which damage to your solar system is covered.
What do I check in my policy in Upper Valais so that hail damage to the modules is covered?
Check whether natural hazard damage is included and whether the solar system is taken into account in the sum insured as part of the building. Ask your insurer whether it wants the system reported. We give you the system data for this.
Who documents hail damage to a solar system for the insurer in Upper Valais?
We inspect the system on site, document the damage for your insurer and replace defective modules. We put together the findings, photos and quote as a claim file. Whether and how much your insurer pays, it decides according to your policy.
Can I always see hail damage on the modules?
No. Broken glass or cracks are visible. Fine cell cracks inside cannot be seen with the naked eye. They can reduce output or later lead to hotspots. So an inspection is worthwhile even if the modules look intact from the outside.
May I leave the system running after the hail?
Not if there is broken glass or visibly damaged cables. Broken modules can carry voltage. Switch the system off at the inverter switch if you can reach it safely, and keep away from the modules. Then call us.
Does cantonal building insurance pay for hail damage to a solar system?
Often yes, depending on the policy and the canton. Fixed-mounted systems are often covered by the cantonal building insurance, sometimes extra cover is needed. Check your policy and report the damage promptly. We supply the technical documents.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
