Hail damage to solar systems in the Canton of St. Gallen

What applies in the Canton of St. Gallen after hail damage

Who insures your solar system in the Canton of St. Gallen

In the Canton of St. Gallen, the building insurance of the Canton of St. Gallen (GVSG) is responsible. According to its information, solar systems fitted to the building are usually co-insured against fire and natural hazard events. Hail is in the list of insured natural hazard events. Exceptions apply to so-called contracting systems operated by third parties. If your system belongs to a contractor, clarify the cover with them first. For systems you own, it is worth comparing the sum insured with the invoice after construction.

What to do after hail

Report the damage to the GVSG before anything is repaired. We inspect the system on site: visual check of the modules, string measurement, and checks of cables, inverter and mounting structure. The findings with photos and the quote for replacing modules make up your claim file. The GVSG decides on the payout. Once the damage has been approved, we replace the defective modules.

Documents for your report

For the report to the GVSG, the date and time of the hail, photos of the damage and the invoice for the system are helpful. Fine cell cracks only show up in measurements. We put everything together in one set of findings and add a cost estimate for replacing modules. Keep all receipts until the insurer has closed the claim. This makes follow-up questions easier and speeds up processing.

Hail protection for new systems

On its page on protection against natural hazards, the GVSG names the «Hagelschutz einfach automatisch» (simple automatic hail protection) system as an effective measure for buildings. It mainly concerns blinds. For the modules themselves, the Swiss hail register (Hagelregister) gives tested hail resistance figures. We discuss the choice of modules at the free site visit and support the system from planning through to commissioning.

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Is my solar system in the Canton of St. Gallen insured against hail by the GVSG?

Solar systems fitted to the building are usually co-insured, and hail counts as a natural hazard event. Exceptions apply to contracting systems.

What applies in the Canton of St. Gallen to a contracting system after hail?

The GVSG excludes contracting systems from co-insurance. Contact the operator of the system and its insurer.

What can I do about hail damage in the Canton of St. Gallen?

The GVSG points to the «Hagelschutz einfach automatisch» (simple automatic hail protection) system, which mainly protects blinds. For modules, it helps to choose hail-tested products from the Swiss hail register (Hagelregister).

Can I always see hail damage on the modules?

No. Broken glass or cracks are visible. Fine cell cracks inside cannot be seen with the naked eye. They can reduce output or later lead to hotspots. So an inspection is worthwhile even if the modules look intact from the outside.

May I leave the system running after the hail?

Not if there is broken glass or visibly damaged cables. Broken modules can carry voltage. Switch the system off at the inverter switch if you can reach it safely, and keep away from the modules. Then call us.

Does cantonal building insurance pay for hail damage to a solar system?

Often yes, depending on the policy and the canton. Fixed-mounted systems are often covered by the cantonal building insurance, sometimes extra cover is needed. Check your policy and report the damage promptly. We supply the technical documents.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
