Hail damage to solar systems in the Canton of Solothurn

Hail damage to your solar system: what applies in the Canton of Solothurn

Who insures your solar system in the Canton of Solothurn

In the Canton of Solothurn, the Solothurn building insurance (SGV) insures buildings. It covers fire and natural hazard damage, which includes hail. By its own account, the SGV pays out more than CHF 2 million a year for hail damage to buildings. For solar systems that must be reported, the commune informs the SGV. Even so, check whether your system is recorded with the SGV and whether the sum insured fits the building.

Not every kind of damage is natural hazard damage. Building insurance usually does not cover loss of yield. Your insurance conditions are what counts.

What to do after hail

Document the damage with photos. The SGV recommends arranging tradespeople and obtaining quotes. Do not climb onto the roof: damaged modules can be live.

We inspect the modules, cabling and inverter on site. Fine cell cracks cannot be seen from outside, so we measure the strings. We put together the findings with pictures and the quote for replacing modules as a claim file for the insurer. We replace defective modules.

For handling the claim you need the module type, number, year of construction and the invoice for the system. We put these details together with the findings, so that you do not have to send anything in later.

Hail protection for new systems

In Switzerland, hailstones can reach about 5 cm in diameter. On its page on protection against natural hazards, the SGV explains how buildings can be protected. For new systems, we choose modules that are tested in the Swiss hail register (Hagelregister). We register the system and submit subsidy applications. For insurance cover, you, as the owner, report the system to the SGV.

Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Who is responsible for hail damage to solar systems in the Canton of Solothurn?

Buildings in the Canton of Solothurn are insured against fire and natural hazard damage with the Solothurn building insurance (SGV). How your system is recorded there, you clarify with the SGV or in your policy. We provide the technical documents on the damage.

What should I do first after hail in the Canton of Solothurn?

The SGV advises documenting the damage with photos, arranging tradespeople and obtaining quotes. For a solar system, an inspection by a specialist is added. We arrange an appointment for this.

Does the SGV in the Canton of Solothurn advise on hail protection?

Yes, the SGV offers free on-site advice on damage prevention. For voluntary protective measures, owners can apply for contributions. Whether this also applies to your solar system, ask the SGV directly.

Can I always see hail damage on the modules?

No. Broken glass or cracks are visible. Fine cell cracks inside cannot be seen with the naked eye. They can reduce output or later lead to hotspots. So an inspection is worthwhile even if the modules look intact from the outside.

May I leave the system running after the hail?

Not if there is broken glass or visibly damaged cables. Broken modules can carry voltage. Switch the system off at the inverter switch if you can reach it safely, and keep away from the modules. Then call us.

Does cantonal building insurance pay for hail damage to a solar system?

Often yes, depending on the policy and the canton. Fixed-mounted systems are often covered by the cantonal building insurance, sometimes extra cover is needed. Check your policy and report the damage promptly. We supply the technical documents.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
