Hail damage to solar systems in the Canton of Schwyz

What applies in the Canton of Schwyz after hail damage

Who insures your solar system in the Canton of Schwyz

The Canton of Schwyz has no cantonal building insurance. It is one of the GUSTAVO cantons, where buildings are insured with private insurers. Whether and how your solar system is covered against hail is therefore set out in your policy. Hail is generally counted as natural hazard damage. Check whether this is included, whether solar systems count as part of the building and whether the sum insured was adjusted after construction. If you extend the system, it is worth checking again.

What to do after hail

Report the damage to your insurer before anything is repaired, and note the date and time of the hail. We inspect the system on site, measure the strings and check cabling, inverter and mounting structure. You receive the findings, photos and the quote for replacing modules as a claim file for the insurer. The insurer decides on the payout. We then replace the defective modules.

Documents for your report

For the report to the insurer, it helps to have photos of the visible damage, details of the module type, number and year of construction, and the invoice for the system. A photo of hailstones next to a ruler is also useful. We add the string measurement values and a cost estimate for replacing modules.

Hail protection for new systems

Before you build, it is a good idea to call the insurer. Give the system output and construction costs and have the cover confirmed in writing. When choosing modules, the Swiss hail register (Hagelregister) gives tested hail resistance figures. We discuss the choice at the free site visit and plan the system through to commissioning, all from one source.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Is there a cantonal building insurance for solar systems in the Canton of Schwyz?

No. In the Canton of Schwyz, private companies insure buildings. Your policy shows whether the solar system is covered against hail.

What do I have to do first after hail damage in the Canton of Schwyz?

Report the damage to your insurer before anything is repaired. After that we inspect the system and provide findings, photos and a quote.

Do I have to adjust the sum insured after construction in the Canton of Schwyz?

We recommend it. Tell the insurer the output and the construction costs, so that the system is included in the sum insured.

Can I always see hail damage on the modules?

No. Broken glass or cracks are visible. Fine cell cracks inside cannot be seen with the naked eye. They can reduce output or later lead to hotspots. So an inspection is worthwhile even if the modules look intact from the outside.

May I leave the system running after the hail?

Not if there is broken glass or visibly damaged cables. Broken modules can carry voltage. Switch the system off at the inverter switch if you can reach it safely, and keep away from the modules. Then call us.

Does cantonal building insurance pay for hail damage to a solar system?

Often yes, depending on the policy and the canton. Fixed-mounted systems are often covered by the cantonal building insurance, sometimes extra cover is needed. Check your policy and report the damage promptly. We supply the technical documents.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
