Hail damage to solar systems in the Canton of Obwalden

Hail damage to your solar system: what applies in the Canton of Obwalden

Who insures your solar system in the Canton of Obwalden

There is no state building insurance in the Canton of Obwalden. The owner must still insure a building: with an insurance company licensed in Switzerland, at least at current value, against fire and natural hazard damage. This is stated on the canton’s website. The cantonal tax administration can see the policies during the valuation. Hail is one of the natural hazard damages.

Which insurance covers your solar system therefore depends on your policy. Check whether the system is taken into account in the sum insured as part of the building, and report it to your insurer if you have built new. Building insurance covers loss of yield only if the policy expressly provides for it.

What to do after hail

Report the damage to your insurer first and photograph it from the ground. Do not climb onto the roof. We inspect the system on site, measure the strings and check cables and inverter. We document the findings for the insurer and replace defective modules.

For handling the claim you need the module type, number, year of construction and the invoice for the system. Many policies set a deadline for reporting damage. It is in your insurance conditions: read it first after the event.

Hail protection for new systems

Since the canton has no insurer of its own, the requirements for the modules depend on your insurer. We choose modules with tested hail resistance from the Swiss hail register (Hagelregister) and discuss the choice of class with you. We register the system and submit subsidy applications. Ask your insurer before you build whether it sets any requirements for the modules.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Do I have to insure my building with its solar system in the Canton of Obwalden?

Yes. The owner of a building must insure it against fire and natural hazard damage, at least at current value, with an insurance company licensed in Switzerland. Hail counts as natural hazard damage. Your policy shows how your solar system is covered.

Is there a state insurer for hail damage in the Canton of Obwalden?

No. The Canton of Obwalden has no state building insurance. You choose the insurer freely. So it is important that your policy expressly includes natural hazard damage and the solar system.

What do we do in Obwalden after hail for the insurer?

We inspect the system on site and put together the findings, photos and a quote for replacing modules. You submit the claim file to your insurer. The damage report and the decision on the payout are up to the insurer.

Can I always see hail damage on the modules?

No. Broken glass or cracks are visible. Fine cell cracks inside cannot be seen with the naked eye. They can reduce output or later lead to hotspots. So an inspection is worthwhile even if the modules look intact from the outside.

May I leave the system running after the hail?

Not if there is broken glass or visibly damaged cables. Broken modules can carry voltage. Switch the system off at the inverter switch if you can reach it safely, and keep away from the modules. Then call us.

Does cantonal building insurance pay for hail damage to a solar system?

Often yes, depending on the policy and the canton. Fixed-mounted systems are often covered by the cantonal building insurance, sometimes extra cover is needed. Check your policy and report the damage promptly. We supply the technical documents.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
