Hail damage to your solar system: what applies in the Canton of Nidwalden
Who insures your solar system in the Canton of Nidwalden
In the Canton of Nidwalden, the Nidwalden property insurer (NSV) insures all buildings against fire and natural hazard damage. In its list of natural hazard damage, hail appears alongside flood, storm and inundation. Buildings are in principle insured at replacement value. This way owners should be able to rebuild a damaged building of the same type and size without their own funds.
The NSV also names risks that are not insured. These include technical defects, defects in construction and maintenance, breach of the rules of building practice and poor maintenance. Whether and how your solar system is taken into account in the sum insured, you clarify with the NSV. Building insurance usually does not cover loss of yield.
What to do after hail
Report the damage to the NSV. It provides a document on settling hail claims. Photograph the visible damage from the ground and do not climb onto the roof. We inspect the system on site, check modules, cables and inverter and measure the strings. We document the damage for the insurer and replace defective modules.
Have the module type, number, year of construction and the invoice for the system ready. We provide the technical findings and the quote for replacing modules, so that the damage is fully documented.
Hail protection for new systems
Because the NSV does not cover defects in construction and maintenance, for new systems we make sure the installation is done properly, following the rules of building practice. We choose modules with tested hail resistance from the Swiss hail register (Hagelregister) and register the system. You, as the owner, make the report to the NSV, and we supply you with the details of the system.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Is hail damage to a solar system in the Canton of Nidwalden insured by the NSV?
The NSV insures all buildings in the Canton of Nidwalden against fire and natural hazard damage, and hail is expressly in the list of natural hazard damage. How your solar system is recorded in this, you clarify with the NSV. We provide the system data.
What does the NSV in Nidwalden not cover in building damage?
According to the NSV, not insured are, among other things, technical defects, defects in construction and maintenance, breach of the rules of building practice and poor maintenance. A system that is properly built and maintained avoids disputes over this.
Does the NSV in Nidwalden have an information sheet for hail damage?
Yes, the NSV offers a PDF document on its website on settling hail claims. Read it before you report the damage. We add the technical findings on the solar system.
Can I always see hail damage on the modules?
No. Broken glass or cracks are visible. Fine cell cracks inside cannot be seen with the naked eye. They can reduce output or later lead to hotspots. So an inspection is worthwhile even if the modules look intact from the outside.
May I leave the system running after the hail?
Not if there is broken glass or visibly damaged cables. Broken modules can carry voltage. Switch the system off at the inverter switch if you can reach it safely, and keep away from the modules. Then call us.
Does cantonal building insurance pay for hail damage to a solar system?
Often yes, depending on the policy and the canton. Fixed-mounted systems are often covered by the cantonal building insurance, sometimes extra cover is needed. Check your policy and report the damage promptly. We supply the technical documents.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
