Hail damage to solar systems in the Canton of Lucerne

Hail damage to your solar system: what applies in the Canton of Lucerne

Who insures your solar system in the Canton of Lucerne

In the Canton of Lucerne, the Lucerne building insurance (GVL) insures solar systems. This applies to thermal and photovoltaic systems permanently mounted on the building. It covers fire and natural hazard damage, which includes hail. Excluded are systems built and operated under contracting, unless they are part of the building envelope as an in-roof system.

In the case of business interruption, the GVL covers the physical damage but not loss of yield. Glass breakage and theft can be insured additionally with a private insurer.

What to do after hail

Report the damage to the GVL and photograph it from the ground. Do not climb onto the roof. We then inspect the system on site: modules, cables, connectors, inverter and mounting structure. Cell cracks are often not visible from outside, so we measure the strings as well. We document the damage for the insurer and replace defective modules.

Have the module type, number, year of construction and the invoice for the system ready for the claim file. We provide the technical findings and the quote for replacing modules.

Hail protection for new systems

The GVL states that hailstones of at least 3 cm in diameter are to be expected throughout the Canton of Lucerne. The SIA standard 261/1 sets the 50-year hail event as the minimum protection target. For solar systems, the GVL recommends a hail resistance of at least HW3 and, where possible, a higher class, ideally HW4 or above. The Swiss hail register (Hagelregister) provides information. We choose the modules accordingly.

The GVL asks that the system be reported before work starts and that a second report be submitted after commissioning. The finished system must also be registered with it for acceptance, with an installation certificate (Installationsattest) from a recognised inspection firm. We supply the certificate and the system data for this.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Is my solar system in the Canton of Lucerne insured against hail by the GVL?

The GVL insures solar systems permanently mounted on the building against fire and natural hazard damage. Excluded are systems under contracting that are not part of the building envelope as an in-roof system. Report your system to the GVL.

Does the GVL in the Canton of Lucerne also pay for loss of yield after hail damage?

No. In the case of business interruption after a natural hazard event, the GVL covers the physical damage but not loss of yield. Glass breakage and theft can also be insured additionally with a private insurer.

When do I report a new solar system to the GVL in the Canton of Lucerne?

The GVL asks for the report before work starts, so that cover also applies during construction. After commissioning you submit a second report so that the GVL adjusts the insurance. The forms are on its page on solar systems.

Can I always see hail damage on the modules?

No. Broken glass or cracks are visible. Fine cell cracks inside cannot be seen with the naked eye. They can reduce output or later lead to hotspots. So an inspection is worthwhile even if the modules look intact from the outside.

May I leave the system running after the hail?

Not if there is broken glass or visibly damaged cables. Broken modules can carry voltage. Switch the system off at the inverter switch if you can reach it safely, and keep away from the modules. Then call us.

Does cantonal building insurance pay for hail damage to a solar system?

Often yes, depending on the policy and the canton. Fixed-mounted systems are often covered by the cantonal building insurance, sometimes extra cover is needed. Check your policy and report the damage promptly. We supply the technical documents.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
