Hail damage to your solar system: what applies in Graubünden
Who insures your solar system in Graubünden
In Graubünden, the Graubünden building insurance (GVG), based in Chur, is the cantonal building insurer. The information platform on protecting buildings from natural hazards lists it as the specialist unit for natural hazard prevention, which also advises on hail protection. Hail is generally counted as natural hazard damage.
Check with the GVG whether and how your system is included in the sum insured and whether a report is needed after construction. Building insurance usually does not cover loss of yield.
What to do after hail
Report the damage to your insurer and photograph the visible damage from the ground. Do not climb onto the roof: damaged modules can be live. We inspect the system on site, check modules, cables and inverter and measure the strings. We document the damage for the insurer and replace defective modules.
For handling the claim you need the module type, number, year of construction and the invoice for the system. We provide the technical findings and the quote for replacing modules. For systems at high altitude, winter access is a further factor. We then arrange the inspection after the snow has melted or when there is safe access to the roof.
Hail protection for new systems
In the mountains, snow and wind come on top of hail. For new systems, we choose modules with tested hail resistance from the Swiss hail register (Hagelregister) and look for a mounting structure that suits the altitude. The GVG unit answers questions on protection against natural hazard damage before you build. We register the system and submit subsidy applications. We put together the details of the system for your insurer so that they are complete if damage occurs later.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Who is responsible for insuring hail damage to buildings in Graubünden?
The Graubünden building insurance (GVG) in Chur. It also runs the unit for natural hazard prevention, which advises on hail protection. How your solar system is recorded in the insurance, you clarify with the GVG.
Can I get advice from the GVG in Graubünden on hail protection for my solar system?
According to the information platform on natural hazards, the GVG natural hazard prevention unit is the contact point for building protection, including hail. Call them before you build. We then choose suitable modules.
What do you document in Graubünden after hail damage to a solar system?
We inspect the modules, cabling and inverter on site, measure the strings and record the findings with pictures. A quote for replacing modules is included. You submit the claim file to your insurer.
Can I always see hail damage on the modules?
No. Broken glass or cracks are visible. Fine cell cracks inside cannot be seen with the naked eye. They can reduce output or later lead to hotspots. So an inspection is worthwhile even if the modules look intact from the outside.
May I leave the system running after the hail?
Not if there is broken glass or visibly damaged cables. Broken modules can carry voltage. Switch the system off at the inverter switch if you can reach it safely, and keep away from the modules. Then call us.
Does cantonal building insurance pay for hail damage to a solar system?
Often yes, depending on the policy and the canton. Fixed-mounted systems are often covered by the cantonal building insurance, sometimes extra cover is needed. Check your policy and report the damage promptly. We supply the technical documents.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
