Hail damage to your solar system: what applies in German-speaking Fribourg
Who insures your solar system in German-speaking Fribourg
German-speaking Fribourg is part of the Canton of Fribourg. There, the cantonal building insurance ECAB insures all buildings, including against natural hazards such as hail. For solar systems, the ECAB sets out clear conditions in its FAQ. The panels must be listed in the ECAB valuation record, and the system must belong to the building owner or the condominium owner. The ECAB does not cover systems owned by tenants or systems under contracting.
As soon as a building permit has been issued or a valuation has been requested, the ECAB says there is provisional protection without a prior valuation. After construction, the valuation can be adjusted using invoices and photos of the system.
What to do after hail
Report the damage to the ECAB and photograph what you can see from the ground. Do not climb onto the roof. We inspect the system on site, check modules, cables and inverter, and measure the strings. We document the findings for the insurer. We replace defective modules. The ECAB decides on the payout.
For handling the claim you need the module type, number, year of construction and the invoice for the system. If you have not yet had the system included in the valuation, do so before you report any damage.
Hail protection for new systems
The ECAB lists hail, wind and surface water as frequent meteorological causes of damage and offers advice on protective measures. For new systems, we look for modules with tested hail resistance from the Swiss hail register (Hagelregister). We register the system and submit subsidy applications. So that your cover is right, have the ECAB include the system in the valuation. You receive the invoice and photos from us.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Is my solar system in German-speaking Fribourg covered for hail damage?
According to the ECAB FAQ, solar panels must be listed in the valuation record for the ECAB to cover them. The system must also belong to your building or condominium unit. Check your valuation record.
Does ECAB cover apply to solar systems under a contracting arrangement in German-speaking Fribourg?
The ECAB states that solar panels under a contracting arrangement are not covered by it. If you run a system under contracting, clarify hail protection with the operator under the contract.
What do I have to report to the ECAB after building a solar system in German-speaking Fribourg?
To adjust the cover, the ECAB requires a new valuation. For this, you submit invoices and photos of the system after construction. We provide you with the invoice and the system data.
Can I always see hail damage on the modules?
No. Broken glass or cracks are visible. Fine cell cracks inside cannot be seen with the naked eye. They can reduce output or later lead to hotspots. So an inspection is worthwhile even if the modules look intact from the outside.
May I leave the system running after the hail?
Not if there is broken glass or visibly damaged cables. Broken modules can carry voltage. Switch the system off at the inverter switch if you can reach it safely, and keep away from the modules. Then call us.
Does cantonal building insurance pay for hail damage to a solar system?
Often yes, depending on the policy and the canton. Fixed-mounted systems are often covered by the cantonal building insurance, sometimes extra cover is needed. Check your policy and report the damage promptly. We supply the technical documents.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
