Hail damage to your solar system: what applies in the Canton of Bern
Who insures your solar system in the Canton of Bern
In the Canton of Bern, the Bern building insurance (GVB) insures buildings on a compulsory basis. It covers fire and natural hazard events, and hail is one of them. On its registration page, the GVB points out that photovoltaic modules are exposed to the elements like the building envelope. It lists solar systems under this insurance. If you have not yet reported your system, you can register it with the GVB afterwards. Check your policy before damage occurs.
Building insurance usually does not cover loss of yield. What your insurance covers in your case is set out in the general insurance conditions.
What to do after hail
According to the GVB’s description, building damage tends to occur when hailstones are about the size of a walnut. Report the damage to the GVB first. Document it with pictures and obtain quotes. The GVB assessor approves the carrying out of the repair. Have the invoices made out to yourself: the GVB settles with you as the owner.
We inspect the system on site, document the damage for the insurer and replace defective modules. Fine cell cracks are not visible from outside, so we measure the strings as well. You receive the findings, photos and quote in writing for the assessor.
For the file, have the module type, number, year of construction and the invoice for the system ready. If you have not yet reported the system, the findings also help to inform the assessor about the type and size of the system.
Hail protection for new systems
For a new system, we look for tested modules. The Swiss hail register (Hagelregister) lists hail-tested building components. We register the system. You, as the owner, make the report to the GVB, and we supply the details of the system for it. You can find more on planning on our page on solar systems.

Frequently asked questions
Before you get in touch.
Is the site visit really free?
Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.
Does the GVB pay for hail damage to my solar system in the Canton of Bern?
On its registration page, the GVB lists solar systems under the compulsory building insurance, which covers fire and natural hazard events. Hail is a natural hazard event. Your policy shows whether your system is registered with the GVB. If not, register it afterwards using the GVB form.
Who assesses hail damage to modules in the Canton of Bern?
After the damage report, a GVB assessor looks after you. The assessor confirms the extent of the damage and approves the repair. We provide the findings, photos and a quote for replacing the modules.
What do I have to pay myself for hail damage to a solar system in the Canton of Bern?
In the standard GVB cover, natural hazard damage carries an excess of 10 percent of the damage amount, at most CHF 1,000 and at least CHF 100 per building and claim. Your insurance conditions are what counts.
Can I always see hail damage on the modules?
No. Broken glass or cracks are visible. Fine cell cracks inside cannot be seen with the naked eye. They can reduce output or later lead to hotspots. So an inspection is worthwhile even if the modules look intact from the outside.
May I leave the system running after the hail?
Not if there is broken glass or visibly damaged cables. Broken modules can carry voltage. Switch the system off at the inverter switch if you can reach it safely, and keep away from the modules. Then call us.
Does cantonal building insurance pay for hail damage to a solar system?
Often yes, depending on the policy and the canton. Fixed-mounted systems are often covered by the cantonal building insurance, sometimes extra cover is needed. Check your policy and report the damage promptly. We supply the technical documents.
Which regions do you cover?
All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
