Hail damage to solar systems in the Canton of Basel-Country

Hail damage to your solar system: what applies in Basel-Country

Who insures your solar system in Basel-Country

In the Canton of Basel-Country, insurance against fire and natural hazard damage is compulsory for buildings. The Basel-Country cantonal building insurance (BGV) is responsible. It expressly counts hail among natural hazard damage. According to its information sheet, solar and photovoltaic systems permanently installed on or at the building are insured by the BGV.

The BGV asks that every installation be reported with the costs of procurement and installation. This way the sum insured matches the value of your building. Check whether your system has been reported.

What to do after hail

Report the damage to the BGV and record it with photos. Do not climb onto the roof. We inspect the system on site, measure the strings and check the cables and inverter. We submit the findings to the insurer as a claim file. We replace defective modules.

For handling the claim you need the module type, number, year of construction and the invoice for the system. The costs of procurement and installation are the same details that the BGV asks for when you report the system.

Limits of BGV cover and hail protection

The BGV does not insure everything. It cannot insure collector mats or systems that do not comply with the recognised rules of building practice. Free-standing systems can be insured voluntarily as building-like objects. If you take out wider cover with a private insurer, for example for loss of yield, you can apply to the BGV for a cover exclusion.

For new systems, we build to the recognised rules. We choose modules with tested hail resistance from the Swiss hail register (Hagelregister) and report the system. You, as the owner, make the report to the BGV with the construction costs. We supply you with the invoice for it.

Frequently asked questions

Before you get in touch.

Your question is not listed?

044 980 08 80info@solarinnovation.ch
Is the site visit really free?

Yes. The visit and the quote cost you nothing and commit you to nothing. You only decide once you hold the binding quote in your hands.

Is my solar system in Basel-Country insured against hail by the BGV?

Solar and photovoltaic systems permanently installed on or at the building are insured by the BGV. The BGV natural hazard insurance expressly names hail. Report the system together with the costs of procurement and installation.

What applies to free-standing solar systems in Basel-Country?

Free-standing systems can be insured voluntarily with the BGV as building-like objects. The BGV cannot insure collector mats or systems that do not comply with the recognised rules of building practice. Ask the BGV before you build.

Can I take out additional insurance for loss of yield in the Canton of Basel-Country?

The BGV information sheet mentions extended insurance with private insurers, for example for loss of yield. If you are insured there, you can apply to the BGV in writing for a cover exclusion and enclose the proof. We advise clarifying this with both insurers beforehand.

Can I always see hail damage on the modules?

No. Broken glass or cracks are visible. Fine cell cracks inside cannot be seen with the naked eye. They can reduce output or later lead to hotspots. So an inspection is worthwhile even if the modules look intact from the outside.

May I leave the system running after the hail?

Not if there is broken glass or visibly damaged cables. Broken modules can carry voltage. Switch the system off at the inverter switch if you can reach it safely, and keep away from the modules. Then call us.

Does cantonal building insurance pay for hail damage to a solar system?

Often yes, depending on the policy and the canton. Fixed-mounted systems are often covered by the cantonal building insurance, sometimes extra cover is needed. Check your policy and report the damage promptly. We supply the technical documents.

Which regions do you cover?

All of German-speaking Switzerland. We build most often in the cantons of Zurich, St. Gallen, Schwyz and Aargau. Our locations are in Zumikon ZH and Lachen SZ.
